What do people really name their pets?
Cities and countries keep registers of licensed pets, and many publish them as open data. We combined 1,402,459 dogs and 375,107 cats from 33 places in 6 countries to show how popular each name really is, and where.
About both
- Dog names vs cat names: which names work for both, and which are only for one
- All places: every city and country whose pet register is open data
- Data sources and licences
Why this site?
I made MixedName to help parents find baby names that work in two languages. Pet names turned out to be a world of their own: some are classic human names, others (Oreo, Biscuit, Mocha) are never given to people at all. Instead of guessing which pet names are popular, this site counts them from real registers that cities publish.
